Team TWYE has been working furiously through the summer heat to bring weight tracking to Tweetwhatyoueat. A new “Weight” tab will soon be added to your diary allowing you to post, and privately view your weight entries as easily as you post food entries on TWYE today. Below is a screenshot of the new Weight tab. Your diary will now have two tabs allowing you to toggle between food entries and weight entries (food tab show active).

Posting a new weight entry is easy! Here are some syntax examples.

  • ‘d twye #170’ weigh-in at 170 pounds
  • ‘d twye #171 - couldn’t keep my hands out of the cookie jar’ weigh-in at 171 pounds with optional comment! Add a comment to your entry by using a dash “-” followed by the comment text

Weight entries are broken up by month and display the: date/time of your entry, the weight value in Kilos or Pounds, and an optional comment about the weight entry.

A new setting under Edit Settings will allow you to choose your preferred unit of measure for weight entries - Kilos or Pounds.

A few other quick things of note:

  1. Weight entries will not appear on the homepage. Rest assured
  2. People viewing your diary will only see food entries, not your weight entries

The target release date for weight tracking is end of July. Please feel free to post comments/questions about the functionality below. Any other ideas for weight-related syntax are welcome!

Can you graph the weights like the Hackers diet?
  2. Kitzzy Aviles Says:
This is a great feature! I 2nd the idea of graphing it. Also, what about an easy way to track water intake?
  3. aressidi (of TWYE) Says:
Chris and Kitzzy, thanks for the feedback! We do intend to add graphing and we'll shoot to get it out with the initial release of weight tracking though it may be an add-on soon to follow the initial release. Kitzzy, for water tracking, what did you have in mind?

could we have the option of having our weight shown? Some people (myself included) would like that public accountability for what we're doing with our weight. Just a simple "show on public profile, yes/no" option?
  5. aressidi (of TWYE) Says:
Hi Tyler, that's an interesting idea. We can make it an option under Privacy Settings in Edit Settings. By default, your weight entries will not show on the homepage, or be public, but you will have the option to make them so. This functionality won't make it out with the debut release of Weight tracking, but we'll add it to the queue. Thanks for the great suggestion.

For the water tracking, just some simple notation it can recognize and add up the numbers at the end of the day. You could specify in the profile what measurement to use (ounces or liters) and then just tweet something like water:8 and that would add it to the water tally for that day. When you tweet that again on the same day, the tally would then say 16. Is kinda like gyminee has a little glass of water and you can click an arror up or down to change it, but I think it would be best if we could just tweet a number and it would add it to the total based on the measurements we specified in the profile.

The "News" link from the main TWYE area is broken, inadvertently linking to news.tweetHwhatyoueat.com. Also, the diary linking is having the same problem it was a month ago: http://news.tweetwhatyoueat.com/2008/6/16/tweetwhatyoueat-releases-crowdcal#comment-19 It still doesn't matter to me if the /user directory is going away, I just need "the final answer" for purposes of updating bookmarks. Thanks!
  8. aressidi (of TWYE) Says:
Hi JK, I fixed the news link (thanks for pointing that out), and added back in your route. You can again access your diary through /diary/yourname and /diary/user/yourname.

I've been using TWYE for 3 days now, and it is great. I really like the weight track feature, and agree that having the option to show it on my page would be good for accountability. I've always had a difficult time remembering to right down what I've eaten, especially at the end of the day. Using Twitter to text it makes it MUCH easier. And because I am tracking it, I am paying much more attention to what I eat and even the serving size and portions. Many thanks for this great tool!

Hi guys, Just to let you know I love what you've built here. Been using it for 3 days and really happy with how it works (espcially love the auto-fill calories piece. One suggestion. "Ave Cal" isn't really useful unless you're planning on splitting daily calories across meals (which isn't really what people do). How about implementing an "Average Daily Calorie Count" instead? Keep up the great work http://twitter.com/OwenC
